Why the ii–V–I matters

The most common progression in jazz

Tension and release

The ii chord sets things up, the V chord builds tension, and the I chord resolves it. You'll find this move in almost every jazz standard.

Guide tones lead the way

The 3rd and 7th of each chord move by a half step or stay put. Play just those notes and you'll already sound like the changes.

Practice in every key

Standards change key all the time. Moving the ii–V–I down a whole step or around the circle builds the reflexes you need on the bandstand.
